With the spate of publicity surrounding the possible health risks posed by childhood immunization, parents are no longer simply following doctor's orders and automatically having their children vaccinated. Instead, they are asking questions. The problem is the search for answers only leads parents to conflicting, one-sided information: doctors claim that parents are endangering their child's life if they refuse shots, while radical vaccine opponents claim parents are endangering their child's life if they accept shots. With THE VACCINE BOOK, parents finally have one, fair, impartial, fact-based resource they can turn to for answers. Each chapter is devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But THE VACCINE BOOK will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze.

  • February 8, 2010Great book

This was a very good book. I liked how it gave you a list of what is in the vaccinations they give. I also like how they are none bias. They tell you the facts and then you can make your own decisions.

  • January 6, 2010I Can Breathe A Sigh of Relief

I put off buying this book for quite some time. I knew there was so much free information on the internet, I thought I could just read that information to make an informed decision about my children's vaccinations. The more I read in the internet, the more confused I became. It got harder and harder to understand and make the choice for my children.
I ordered the book and wish I had done it sooner! It presents the information in a concise, but well explained manner. I feel so relieved and so much more informed after reading this book. It has taken away the burden of not knowing what could happen if I vaccinate or if I don't vaccinate.
The purpose of this book is not for you to do it Dr. Sears' way, but for you to decide the way for your own children. He does offer his way, but leaves you feeling confident to choose your own path.

  • December 27, 2009Not good enough...

First, I was frustrated that he tried so hard to be buddy-buddy with parents. I don't need a friend, I need a doctor. He came across as trying to encourage vaccination by presenting information is a chummy sort of way. It struck me as unprofessional.

He also said "I wasn't able to find" or "I'm not aware of" or "I don't have a package insert for" at least once a chapter. If you need to put that in your book, it's not ready to be published. Especially now, he should have been able to find all the information he needed without much effort.

I also found it irritating that he acts like thimerosal is dangerous when study after study has shown that it's not. It's actually illegal in California but years and years after it was outlawed their autism rates are still high.

I'm sure other reviewers have said these things. The one thing I did like was the explanation of the shots, what they contain and what the diseases are like. I appreciate that he tried to be neutral, but I don't think he succeeded.

A much better book on the topic is Autism's False Prophets by Paul Offit. That's worth reading regardless of your perspective on the topic.

  • December 23, 2009Shows both sides so you can make a truly informed decision.

I constantly refer back to this book all the time. I'm glad I have this in my parenting library. It is well worth it. As a first time parent, I had the fear of vaccines put in me with all the controversy surrounding them, but I was also afraid of leaving her vulnerable to diseases.

I had to know more, and this book tells you everything you need to know. It tells you the common reactions and rare but dangerous risks associated with each vaccine, symptoms of reactions, how Dr. Sears came to his conclusions/did his math/did his research, what ingredients are in each vaccine, how common/rare or dangerous/benign each disease is that is prevented by each vaccine, the government recommended schedule, an alternative schedule for parents who want the minimum amount of vaccines, and his recommended schedule... Plus much much more...

This book will help any parent make an informed decision either way and feel confident that they made good decisions. Yes, Dr. Sears shows you that there are many decisions to be made. It's not all or nothing unless you want it to be. You have lots of options that he outlines for you. I feel like I can trust this book because it's not one sided. It seems difficult to trust anyone who wants you to blindly trust any argument and even withholds information from you in order to convince you of their side, but Dr. Sears is the only one so far who doesn't do that. He seems to lean one way more than the other but also respects and understands the other side of the argument. Furthermore, he doesn't agree completely with the side he's on and doesn't base his decisions on just one way of doing things. He does them his own way, which every parent has a right to do, and every parent has a right to be informed when they make decisions for the heatlh of their children.

  • December 2, 2009informative and helpful

I was, of course, nervous about my sons upcoming first round of shots. I bought this book not to decide whether or not to vaccinate, but because I had heard it offered a delayed schedule so he wouldn't have to get so many at once in his little body. Each chapter is completely devoted to one vaccine...its disease, its ingredients, how its made, and much more. At first it seemed daunting (after all, i was only after the chart in the back), but its a much easier read than it looks, and like i said, very informative.
